The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) is an active leader in advocating for research support, standards of care and policy submissions for diabetes mellitus in Australia. ADS members represent a broad range of professions including endocrinologists, researchers, scientists, academics, general practitioners and allied health practitioners. The ADS works both independently and collaboratively with a number of key stakeholder groups in areas including the development of clinical diabetes related guidelines/position statements, diabetes educational programs, and research support. The ADS is strongly committed to improving the lives and wellbeing of the person with diabetes and to promote the highest standards of patient care and treatment.

National Diabetes Strategy

The Australian National Diabetes Strategy 2021–2030 (the Strategy)

  • considers current approaches to diabetes services and care;
  • considers the role of governments and the diabetes sector;
  • ensures current efforts and investments align with identified needs;
  • maximises the efficient use of health care resources and
  • articulates a vision for preventing, detecting and managing diabetes.

It is anticipated that a mid-term review will be undertaken in 2025 or when substantial change in the evidence base warrants it. An Implementation Plan and indicators for measuring progress will accompany the Strategy, building on the approach taken for the 2016–2020 Strategy. These will be developed in collaboration with stakeholders across all levels of governments, the health sector and relevant organisations. Progress against the Implementation Plan will be reviewed throughout the life of the Strategy.

Submissions to Government (on behalf of ADS)

Submissions from ADS and other joint partners advocating for specific diabetes related areas of interest:

The Diabetes Alliance has responded to the government’s public consultation on funding and subsidies for health technologies and medicines. Our response includes suggestions for improvement, including more flexible assessment processes, faster access through greater weighting of international approval, increased and more equitable access, and looking beyond clinical criteria in assessments of technologies and medicines.
