ADS offers the following benefits to Ordinary, Specialist and Student Financial Members:-

ADS Membership Categories & Eligibility

ADS Membership for the 2021 period is from 01 July 2021 to 30 June 2022

(Admission to membership at any stage during the year will still attract a full year subscription fee).

Criteria for Specialist-Scientist Membership:

A Specialist-Scientist Member is considered if they are a non-clinician who holds a PhD (or equivalent) with the predominant research field being diabetes.

The following applies as a Specialist-Scientist Member:-

(1) has the right to receive notices of and to attend and be heard at any general meeting; and

(2) has the right to vote on any motion at any general meeting 

Please Note: Applicant must provide evidence of the above to be considered as a specialist-scientist member.

Criteria for Specialist-Clinician Membership:

A Specialist-Clinician Member is considered if they are a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) and has satisfactorily completed training in Diabetes Management supervised by the Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology of the RACP, or equivalent training acceptable, in its discretion, to the National Council.

The following applies as a Specialist-Clinician Member:-

(1) has the right to receive notices of and to attend and be heard at any general meeting; and

(2) has the right to vote on any motion at any general meeting 

Please Note: Applicant must provide evidence of the above to be considered as a specialist-clinician member.

Criteria for Professional Membership:

Any medical graduate or scientist interested in diabetes mellitus; or has a key clinical role in professional care of people with diabetes, may apply for Professional Membership of the Society.

Please Note: Professional Membership conveys similar benefits to Specialist Membership, except for the right to vote on certain matters in respect of any Special Resolution, and fewer positions on the National Council.

Criteria for Student Membership:

A student is classified as a member who is a current registered student involved studying (part time or full time) with an annual income limit of A$35,000 and has the rights and obligations as Professional Membership. Proof of student status/registration must accompany the membership application form. Applications for reduced rates (student) including signature and phone number of Supervisor is required for student members.

Criteria for Corresponding Membership:

Any medical graduate or scientist interested in diabetes mellitus; or has a key clinical role in professional care of people with diabetes. Applicants must reside overseas for a period of 12 months or more.

The following applies as a Corresponding Member:-

(1) has the right to receive notices of and to attend and be heard at any general meeting; but

(2) has no right to vote at any general meeting

Criteria for Retired Membership:

Any member that is no longer working actively in a full-time role may be admitted as a Retired Member. Proof of either evidence of retirement or a signed statement is required and provided to the ADS Secretariat.

The following applies as a Retired Member:-

(1) has the right to receive notices of and to attend and be heard at any general meeting; but

(2) has no right to vote at any general meeting

Honorary Life Membership:

Any individual may be granted honorary life membership for consideration by the National Council (see clause 20).

The following applies as an Honorary Life Member:-

(1) has the right to receive notices of and to attend and be heard at any general meeting; but

(2) has no right to vote at any general meeting other than in respect of Special Resolutions

Honorary Life Members are not required to pay fees.


Membership Approval Process

Once applications are received by the Society Office, they are submitted for consideration at the next ADS Council Meeting. The Society Office will inform the applicants by a written letter of their membership status. If your application is successful, we will send you instructions on how to login to the Member area via the ADS website. Once your application is approved the Society Office will process your membership fee payment and will send the applicant a receipt of payment. Applicants official membership commences from the day that application is approved by the ADS Council.

Privacy Policy

Please read the ADS Privacy Policy below prior to applying for membership:

The Australian Diabetes Society complies with the new Australian Privacy Principles; The Privacy Amendment (Enhancing Privacy Protection) Act 2012, effective 12 March 2014. Personal information provided by Members, or that has been provided prior to 12 March 2014, will only be used or disclosed by the Australian Diabetes Society in accordance with the National Privacy Principles for purposes directly related to membership of the Society.

The Australian Diabetes Society will not disclose personal information to third parties except to hospitals and other health institutions, medical colleges and specialist medical societies, and to service providers, and only for purposes directly related to:

• providing education, training and continuing medical education / professional development;
• the supply of services and products endorsed by or associated with the Australian Diabetes Society; and
• membership of the Society.

In such circumstances the Australian Diabetes Society will use all reasonable efforts to ensure that the recipient handles such personal information in accordance with appropriate privacy principles and only for the purpose for which it was provided.

Future requests for any Member to provide or update personal information will be accompanied by a request for the Member’s consent for any disclosure of that information in accordance with the privacy legislation.

by the ADS.
